The workshops offered here represent a unique opportunity to work with a truly creative and accomplished professional performer of international calibre and experience.
In the wake of celebrating an exceptional 25 years of STOMP in New York, Carl is currently offering workshops for schools, colleges, corporate events and at masterclass level.
The energy, creativity and opportunity for learning, growth and expression in this environment are unique and without equal. Workshops also available across a wide variety of percussion instruments.
Adaptable to suit all ages and abilities
“I am a co-founder, writer and performer of the internationally acclaimed, multi award-winning theatre show STOMP and am now the sole provider of genuine STOMP workshops in the UK and beyond, as referenced on the STOMP website.
In brief, my workshops are very much bespoke in terms of facilitating any specific requirements of the client. They offer a unique environment which, with a good deal of fun and hard work, inspires participants to focus on and grow in areas fundamental to the performing arts and beyond... imagination, communication, improvisation, stagecraft, presentation, teamwork, inclusivity, perseverance, physical presence/co-ordination, dedication, excellence and an "anything is possible" mindset.
Key elements are body percussion, junk percussion, movement, comedy and theatre. Standard workshops usually run across the course of a day with a series of approximately one and a half hour sessions, ideally for groups of 20-30 participants or less, although the only actual limit on group size is space available.
Single sessions and half days are also available. Two or more days can be arranged at a significant discount. This option is popular with clients who have larger numbers to accommodate. Alternatively, weekly/fortnightly sessions over the course of a term can be arranged subject to availability.
This serves as a starting point from which we tailor each individual client's STOMP workshops according to their specified requests, ie. space available, number of participants, budget and relevance to elements of the syllabus and any ongoing academic projects.
In the interest of affordability and inclusion, standard fees remain at pre-covid rates starting from £350. A range of discounts and deals available to suit most budgets. As these workshops are very much bespoke, prices are agreed on a client-by-client basis once we have defined aspects such as content, timings/duration, numbers, etc. Costs include planning and preparation, telephone access and materials for up to 30 participants, although larger numbers can be accommodated.
A STOMP workshop is multidisciplinary by nature, giving rise to an exceptional breadth of appeal and relevance across a diversity of participants and contexts from dancers, musicians, actors, performers of all descriptions to those with no experience in the arts at all. All are encouraged to learn from and share skills with each other where and when possible. Cross-pollination of sorts!
Each session opens with a brief introduction and demonstration by myself, where all are welcomed into a wondrous world of possibilities. We then go on to create a short performance piece featuring the above content. Inclusivity, learning and expression, both individual and collective, are very much the order of the day.
The mental health benefits of engagement here are wide-ranging, profound and immediate for people of all ages and walks of life, children and adults alike. My work in schools often involves being invited as a feature of 'Wellbeing Week'. (Please see Testimonials below).
In the aftermath of the sensory and physical isolation endured over repeated lockdowns, my workshops have proven to be of great value in addressing a host of consequent negative impacts faced especially by young people such as issues with anxiety, connection, communication, self-regulation, confidence, behaviour and capacity to simply be in the moment.
In all scenarios, the objective of a final performance presented to parents, colleagues, local community or as part of an events programme is recommended (although of course, not obligatory) as a final goal, adding context and meaning to what has been learned.
Content is adaptable to suit all ages and abilities, from beginners and SEN to masterclass level. There is no greater gift than to give of ourselves via our talents.”
Written and created by Carl Smith, with Stompers Alua Nascimento and Aideen Shields. Directed by Louis Black.
Performances available for Corporate Events.
“The start of a conference sets the tone of what is to come and at a recent event for Vitality Health, Carl added high energy and an element of surprise for our guests.
Being in the presence of such a talented individual brings a certain gravitas and Carl kicked off the proceedings perfectly, uniting a disparate team through movement, music and much fun!
Carl brings a unique energy and was an absolute pleasure to work with. The feedback has been so positive and I look forward to the next opportunity.” – Lisa James, Director and Founder, The Wentworth Collective

According to an extensive study conducted by the School of Business and Management at Pepperdine University entitled “Drumming as a Teambuilding Intervention”, “People connect on a much deeper and more universal level through music in general and drumming in particular, thereby impacting lasting learning and individual change in ways that improve organisational effectiveness.”
“Teambuilding is a specific intervention to address issues relating to the development of the team, focusing on improving interpersonal relations or improved productivity and alignment with organisational goals. Examples include emphasis on fun and enjoyment, simulation of workplace dynamics and problem solving.” (Kriek and Venter, 2009)
The content of these workshops is diversely applicable and adaptable and as such, covers literally all aspects considered as seminal when seeking to make insightful improvements to any company and its constituent teams and leaders.
“A collaborative relationship is not merely the sum of its parts, but a synergistic alliance that maximises the contributions of each participant, resulting in action that is greater than the sum of individual works.”
Learning is activity-based, communication-based, skills-based, personality-based and problem solving-based, thereby addressing a host of key elements.
Creative thinking, employee bonding and connection, trust, commitment, coachability, confidence, role clarity, attitude, perseverance, accountability, alignment about process or common goals, supportive relationships, meeting deadlines and excellence in quality of work, all stand to benefit considerably and profoundly through participation here.
Engagement with the scientifically attested, powerful medium of rhythmic music promotes outcomes for mental health and well-being that are striking and numerous, as confirmed by countless studies in neuroscience, psychology, sociology etc.
“Drumming is a great workout for your brain and can actually make you smarter because when you drum you access your entire brain. Research shows that the physical transmission of rhythmic energy to the brain actually synchronises the left and right hemispheres. So, when the logical left and intuitive right hemispheres pulsate together, your inner guidance system, or intuition, becomes stronger.
The sound of drumming generates new neuronal connections in all parts of the brain. The more connections that can be made, the more integrated our experiences become. This leads to a deeper sense of self- awareness.
Drumming also appears to synchronise the lower areas of the brain (non-verbal) with the frontal cortex (language and reasoning). This integration produces feelings of insight and certainty.
Drumming induces a natural ‘high’ by increasing Alpha brainwaves, enkephalins and endorphins. The same Alpha activity is associated with meditation and other integrative modes of consciousness.” (Christiane Northrup, MD)
“Musical creativity is one of the fundamental functions of the brain, just like language and mathematical logic.” (Psychologist Howard Gardner)
In fact, almost the whole brain is activated by music making. There are clear links between intelligence, timekeeping, the area of the brain managing problem solving and drumming.
“Rhythm literally is the pulse, the life force, of music medicine. Rhythm organises time and sets the beat that allows all other elements to co-exist. Pulse, duration and tempo are aspects of rhythm that move music through its dynamics of fast, slow and everything in between. But the best place to discover the artistry of the beat is within the body. Rhythm is all about feeling.” (Stevens, 2012)
Carl works with body percussion and junk or found object percussion, thereby significantly enhancing and adding to the already proven benefits of straightforward drumming alone.
Workshops focus on rhythm, movement, comedy, theatre, drama and are served with a good dose of fun, offering a super positive environment which nurtures and boosts stress reduction, pleasure, hedonia and positive emotions, enhanced cognitive function, motor skills, immunity and healing, physicality or endorphin production, lower blood pressure, critical thinking and memory, powers of analysis, mental and physical co-ordination, better reflexes and perception of physical space, alignment with the natural world, release of negativity, sense of connectedness, personal transformation and full immersion in the present.
“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” – Plato
Workshops are very much bespoke and are tailored to suit your requirements in terms of content, duration and emphasis on specific themes. You will be inspired by what can be achieved in the given time as barriers to musical expression are removed and myths about having talent and rhythm are dispelled. All have a part to play.
Participants are encouraged to focus on and grow in areas fundamental to the performing arts and beyond, such as imagination, creativity, communication, improvisation, presentation, teamwork, inclusivity, perseverance, presence, co-ordination, dedication and excellence.
A typical workshop begins with a demonstration, welcoming participants into a wonderful world of possibilities, followed by an introductory talk outlining the themes of the day.
After a brief warm up, we proceed to create a short performance piece, ideally to be presented to colleagues and filmed at the end of the day.
This provides a goal to strive for, lending context and meaning. With sufficient time, participants are invited to create and perform their own solos. Problems are solved, deadlines are met and fun is had!
A consolidation session is recommended to finish up, highlighting and pinpointing what has been learned, how it has been learned and the way in which it relates directly to your company and teams.
“Using one's body and random household items or "rubbish" to create unique sounds, textures and music – particularly at a time of crisis on this planet with the ever-growing importance of recycling – is so invigorating and uplifting!
I am passionate about working with people to inspire their innate ability to create, thrive and promote wellness in their lives. I have seen first-hand what a workshop like this can do for self-esteem, confidence, team building and of course musical sensibility.”
First and foremost, a STOMP workshop is FUN. Carl Smith, the workshop leader is one of the founder members and performers of STOMP.
He has toured the world with the sell-out show and was artistic director of the New York show which is still going strong after 25 years.
He has extensive global experience in giving STOMP workshops, has years of experience working with children and can encourage even the shyest child to participate. The workshop appeals to all children of primary age and above.
The magic of a STOMP workshop is that no actual instruments are used. The students will learn how to make sounds with their bodies and, or junk percussion, creating a musical experience they won't have had before.
They will, over the course of the workshop, quickly develop a sense of being part of a group, and encouraged to express themselves individually, especially when performing solos! In the body percussion workshop, the students will use their hands, feet and bodies to make sound and rhythm. This also involves movement, humour and some basic choreography.
Workshops can vary from one hour, half a day, full day, or can be conducted over a period of days, weeks or terms.
Fees charged will vary according to duration and clients' needs. As the nature of these sessions is very much bespoke, prices are negotiable.
